Hobey Ford’s Golden Rod Puppets
Rainbow Bridge
September 10-21
3 shows, $1150, 2 shows $850, 1 show $600
Winner of puppetry’s highest honor, the UNIMA Citation of Excellence, and recipient of three Jim Henson Foundation grants, Hobey Ford is known for excellence in puppetry performance and craft. Hobey adapts folktales from various cultures adding a special “Golden Rod” twist. He uses his own voice to create characters and sound effects, tell stories, and sing. Hobey will present the “Rainbow Bridge,” multi-cultural tales from around the world.
The Rainbow Bridge performance is a collection of teaching tales encouraging respect for self, one another and the world around us. These tales come from the traditions of Latin America, Native America and Europe. Master storyteller Hobey Ford has interpreted each tale and brings them to life through his original and inventive puppetry. Hobey will use a wide range of puppetry styles including shadow puppetry, rod puppetry, Bunraku and his own “foamies” style to tell these traditional stories.
The Rainbow Bridge is a Chumash Native American story about the first people, how they received the gift of fire, moved from their island life to the mainland, and forged a relationship with the dolphins. This shadow puppet tale teaches the benefits of thinking and acting ecologically, with respect for the environment and one another. The performance also includes a traditional Puerto Rican rain forest story with the popular frog character, Coqui. Coqui learns that even those who are small can accomplish large feats in the world. Then the Golden Rod Puppets will put their special twist on the Billy Goats Gruff.
